Apple’s iPhone is continuing its dominance in Australia, with iOS market share up 5 per cent from a year earlier at the expense of Samsung and Google’s Android.
New figures from the Kantar World Panel showed the three months ending April 2017 showed iPhone users accounted for 38.4 per cent of total Australian smartphone sales, up from 32.7 per cent from the same time last year.
“The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus drove this growth, accounting for a combined share of 19.3 per cent, with the smaller iPhone SE also contributing to the brand’s overall increase,” research firm Kantar said in a statement.
“The profile of the iPhone 7 buyer continues to steer away from under 25 year olds and females who were the primary consumers in the three months post launch, with males and 25-34 year olds key to current purchasing.”
Apple’s chief rival Samsung performed well, despite Android’s overall share declining. Android use declined almost three percentage points to 61.1 per cent, with Samsung accounting for 35 per cent of the market.
Sony and LG fell to 2.5 per cent and 2 per cent respectively, while HTC was at 2.7 per cent of the market. Oppo accounted for 2.3 per cent of phones sold while Telstra came in at 2.1 per cent and Google 1.5 per cent.
Android’s much more popular in China, where it accounted for 83.4 per cent of smartphone sales, but its market share fell in the US to 61.7 per cent, compared with 67.7 per cent a year earlier.
Apple is widely tipped to launch its next iPhone range this September.
